C: Cite the Evidence from the Text

You must use clear and specific examples from your research that support your claim. Then the writing must describe, define, provide, and refer the particular details needed to suggest that the story you offer is real instead of fantasy, or a formal expression of opinion.

If you quote exact words or phrases from your research, then use quotations for that data. Then cite the location where you found the materials so that others can verify your work.

E: Explain the Connection

This is How You Write a Formal Expression of Opinion

Opinions are often discouraged when writing in formal ways. Whether you’re creating an essay for school, or you are a news reporter, you cannot use the informal process of stating your thoughts.

Informal writing allows you to say phrases like “I think” and “I believe” to express your opinion adequately. If there is an explicit thought that you want to share, then a phrase such as “in my view” or “in my opinion” are also suitable.

Here are some examples of what it looks like to informally express an opinion in writing.

  • I think that having a sense of humor is critical to a person’s success.
  • I believe that politics in the United States can be less polarizing.
  • In my opinion, the most influential legal change of the last century was to give women the right to vote.

When you transition to academic writing, then you must give your opinion in an implicit manner. That means the tone of the sentence must use an impersonal structure when sharing the thought.

Formal writing still allows you to share an opinion. You use phrases like “it is worth nothing” or “it is reasonable” or “it would seem that” to offer the information.

Here are some examples of what it looks like to formally express an opinion in writing.

  • It is worth noting that some politicians are well aware of the problem that a lack of healthcare coverage provides.
  • It is reasonable to assume that social and economic changes to inner-city neighborhoods could reduce crime.
  • It seems that having access to an education is an essential component of a person’s future success.

When you write formally, then adverbs are a critical component of how you can express your opinion. You would use that structure when it is necessary to qualify or evaluate the content that’s shared in your message.

Words like “interestingly,” “significantly,” or “surprisingly” are all commonly used in formal writing structures to clue in the reader that an opinion is being shared.

If you want to share the opinion of someone else, then you would use the phrase “according to” in formal writing. You would not use that expression to share your own opinion.
Some reporters like to use the term “in the view of this reporter.” Some editors would accept that statement, although not all of them will. You’ll need to speak with your editor about the expectations in that specific circumstance.

Why Planting Trees Won’t Solve the Climate Crisis

The fight against climate change seems pretty straightforward. If we produce more carbon, then we should plant more trees. That would allow us to create a net-zero approach to emissions so that we can maintain healthy ecosystems.

Unfortunately, a solution to our climate crisis isn’t that simple. The act of planting trees isn’t good enough to support our environment. We need our ancient forests and their complexities to create healthy habitats that support all forms of life.

When we plant trees, it is usually through a monoculture approach. Instead of helping to restore homeostasis to our environment, we end up creating even more problems. So, for example, simply going to India and planting millions of trees isn’t going to help the air quality.

Some Countries Have Increased Forest Cover by 20%

Spain, Thailand, Turkey, Greece, and several other countries have managed to increase their forest cover by over 20% in the past 25 years.

What the data suggests is that our forests are getting cut down faster than we can plant trees to replace them.

Cameroon is home to the essential Congo basin rainforest. The government offered to create 12 million hectares of tree cover by 2030. The only problem with that promise is that over 20% of the country’s forests have disappeared to make way for subsistence farming.

The rainforest got replaced with palm oil and banana plantations.

Nigeria pledged to plant a million hectares of trees, but it has lost over 10 million hectares over the past 25 years.

Tree cover is not the same as a forest.

How Much Carbon Does a Forest Remove?

Commercial plantations harvest trees about once per decade. That makes them less efficient at taking carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

If we are to keep global warming in check, then 199 petagrams of carbon must get taken out of our atmosphere by 2100. Creating 350 million hectares of natural forest reforestation would handle about 20% of that goal by itself.

The storage potential for commercialized tree cover is only 16 petagrams with the same acreage. If we don’t change our behavior, then that figure drops to only 3 petagrams.

That’s why we need to move away from the idea of monoculture. Mixed farms might be challenging to run, but it is the approach that supports are ecosystems.

It takes time for trees to grow and store carbon. We must start moving now if we’re going to protect our planet. If we fail to act, then future generations may find themselves struggling for their very survival.

What the Boy Scouts of America Filing for Bankruptcy Means for the Organization

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) filed for bankruptcy protection in February 2020 to relieve the legal pressure it faces from litigation started by sexual abuse victims.


The bankruptcy means that a judge will now place a ceiling on the amount that the BSA will pay to each victim. That means the proceedings could limit the number of assets that get awarded to victims from the accounts of local councils.

A total of 275 lawsuits are currently pending for this century-old organization. An expectation that several thousand additional claims could get filed is considered reasonable because new state laws allow victims to bring cases to the court regardless of when the misconduct happened.

Chapter 11 Allows Scouting Programs to Continue

The BSA says that it intends to use the Chapter 11 bankruptcy process to create a trust that provides compensation to victims. Although the court proceedings will continue, scouting programs will not get interrupted because of this process.

BSA has explored the possibility of filing for bankruptcy since December 2018. It hired a law firm at the time to look at the advantages and disadvantages of Chapter 11 at that time.

The structure of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy allows the organization to create a reorganization plan that keeps the business alive. Creditors still get paid, but the terms of the repayment get renegotiated under the court’s supervision.

BSA made the filing in Delaware.

BSA’s Potential Liability Is Massive

A case in Portland that involved sexual abuse allegations against the Boy Scouts of America resulted in a verdict of nearly $20 million.

Up until the past decade, the BSA had insurance that would cover claims of sexual abuse. Carriers started withdrawing this coverage protection because they argue that the organization knew about the abuse and didn’t tell anyone.

That means the BSA now faces the prospect of funding settlements and litigation internally.

Even with those challenges, the organization had assets in 2018 that totaled $1.4 billion. Another $1.9 billion is in the accounts of local troops. That means the organization is solvent, even when facing the potential surge of upcoming litigation.

BSA likely hopes that the Chapter 11 filing shields the assets of local councils in the same way that the Catholic dioceses could protect parishes and properties from claims.

This case is a warning for any organization that isn’t taking reports of abuse seriously. If the largest youth organization in the U.S. can get crippled because they did nothing, then it can happen to anyone.

Add: An addition to a story that’s already written or in the composition process.

Assignment: An instruction given to a reporter to cover a specific event.

Attribution: Designation of the person quoted in the report, such as the source for the information included in the story.

Banner: The headline that’s across or near the top of the page. It can also be called a ribbon, streamer, or screamer.

B Copy: The bottom section of a story that gets written ahead of an event that happens to close to the publication deadline.

Beat: An assigned area of coverage assigned to a reporter. Can include government, education, crime, or an exclusive story, to name a few.

Break: When a news development becomes available or the point of interruption in a story that started on a previous page.

Bright: An amusing short story.

Bulldog: It is the early edition of the newspaper.

Byline: The name(s) of the reporter(s) who wrote the story. It’s placed on top of the published article.

Correspondent: A reporter who sends news from outside of the newspaper office.

Crony Journalism: Reporting that avoids stories or presents stories lightly to protect friends or personal interests.

Crop: The editing of a photograph to remove a section of the image or to fit the allotted space.

Cut: A printed picture or illustration. Some editors use this term when eliminating material from a story.

Cutline: Text under a picture that names people present in the photograph.

Dateline: A location, such as a city or town, that indicates to the reader where the story begins.

Enterprise Copy: A story that digs deeper into the facts of an event than regular reporting would require. 

Exclusive: A story that delves deeper into a topic than a regular new story; may include named or unnamed sources with unpublished information.

Feature: A news story that emphasizes the entertaining or human aspects of a situation.

Folo: Content that continues an existing story or follows a similar theme of another presented story.

Futures Calendar: A way to track future appointments, interviews, newspaper changes, and story ideas.

Graf: A short paragraph that summarizes or adds to a story or idea.

Handout: An insert added to a newspaper for publication that can include special news stories, roundups, advertisements, etc.

Hard News: News features that cover current events or live coverage.

HFR: Means “Hold for Release.” It is material that cannot be used until it gets released by the source or at a designated time.

Jump: This term refers to the continuation of a story from one page to another.

Insert: Breakout or other features placed into or between a story.

Investigative Reporting: Deeper dive into stories using sources with knowledge of a particular topic; may include privileged documents or interviews with sources that want to remain hidden.

Kill: Removal of a section of a story, or to discard the story entirely.

Lead: The first paragraph of a news story.

Makeup: It’s the design or layout of the piece, including the illustrations, headlines, and body type that the reader sees.

Masthead: This statement is a formal piece of information that includes the name, officers, and place of publication for a newspaper.

Morgue: This term refers to the newspaper library. 

News Hole: Area of the paper for news, illustrations, or non-advertising material.

Off-the-record: Material provided to a reporter in confidence to be used as background information, often unverifiable unless a second source can independently verify the information.

Op-ed Page: An editorial page where the opinions of the news staff or the public can share ideas, positions, and make arguments about relevant topics.

Overnight: Story written before or after a newspaper goes to print, with the intent of publishing it the next day. 

Pool: A selection of reporters and photographers who are designated to specific stories or beats.

Press Release: Content given to news media for publication by individuals, companies, or government officials.

Puff Piece: An irreverent story that may be written for entertainment purposes or to promote something.

Roundup: To gather individual, related stories together.

Rowback: A correction to a previous story.

Running Story: An ongoing development or piece of content that warrants further updates.

Sell: When a reporter pitches an idea for a story.

Shirttail: An addition added to the end of a longer one to clarify a point or to share information on a related topic.

Sidebar: A supporting story that relates to a nearby story; may be written by a separate reporter and published with a byline.

Situation: A roundup piece that gives new readers background information on a particular topic.

Slant: A persuasive piece.

Source: information that helps to build a story; can include people, records, or documents of an event.

Split Page: The front page of an interior section.

Sponsored Content: Story paid for by a third-party, often as an advertisement that is written and displayed like a normal news story; the “sponsored content” or “paid endorsement” designation is important to let readers know the story is not regular editorial content and money may be an influencing factor in the decision to publish the piece. For example, talking about supplement brands in a health story where you see a mention the purchasing of BioRay, Aubrey Organics, and Klaire Labs products, you would want to know that these may be influencing the article; however, since the story isn’t about them, you might not necessarily include any mention of it being sponsored or an endorsement.

Stringer: Contractor worker who is paid per story or number of words.

Tight: When ads reduce space for news stories.

Tip: Information given to editorial staff, sometimes anonymously.

Verification: Checking the authenticity of a story.

Wire Services: An electronic transmission portal operated by the Associated Press or United Press International to make national or international news stories available for publication.

Going into an interview or sitting in a newsroom without a working knowledge of many of these terms can reflect poorly on you. For editorial teams that maintain a high level of quality, they will expect you to know these terms so you can enter the flow of work seamlessly. 

How the Remaining Holocaust Survivors Keep Their Stories Alive

The number of Holocaust survivors seems to be declining every day. There is a real fear that when the last of these courageous people make their way out of this life, a forgetfulness of the horrors they experienced will take place.

That’s why survivors like Erna de Vries are working hard to keep telling their stories of survival to anyone who will listen.

She says that the white bark of a birch tree helps her to recall her time at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Over 1 million people were murdered there during the Holocaust. Even a piece of bread reminds her of the hunger she experienced.

What makes de Vries’ story so unique is that she volunteered to go to the concentration camp. Her mother was Jewish and sent there in 1943, so she elected to join her to avoid being left alone. 

You Must Continue to Tell Everyone What They Did

Erna de Vries tells her story in schools. She speaks to reporters whenever she can. The last words she can remember her mother telling her still ring in her ears.

“You must fight. You must survive. Tell everyone what they did to us.”

Age is catching up with the last remaining Holocaust survivors. Many of them don’t see or hear too well, making it a challenge to get their stories into the 24-hour cycles of news coverage. 


That’s why several organizations in Germany and around the world are making the effort today to document all of these stories before they are gone. It is a way to go beyond the numbers and dates of the Holocaust to show how real people suffered because of these actions.

After speaking with local schoolchildren, de Vries reveals a letter that she received. It describes her as a “great and courageous” woman.


“I cannot say it enough. I have so much respect for you.”

It brings de Vries back to that moment with her mother. She knew then that her family wouldn’t come together again because of Auschwitz. Now she fights to keep her life story relevant so that the world doesn’t repeat it.

How Canada Manages Record Snowfall Accumulation

St. John’s International Airport in Newfoundland, Canada, recorded 30 inches of snow on January 17, 2020. That event broke the previous daily snowfall record of 26.93 inches that was set in 1999.

Residents found themselves struggling to dig themselves out of snow that reached waist-high before it blew into drifts.

The weather event caused the province to declare a state of emergency for the region. Officials wanted people to stay off of the roads, but a few restrictions were lifted by the end of the weekend so that people could get fuel, prescriptions, and other necessities.

Canadian Armed Forces operations announced that they would help with snow removal, transportation to warming centers, and provide care for those who had health concerns.
